DMV Requirements for Obtaining a California Driver's Permit
1. Driver Education Completion
Students must be at least
15½ years old and have successfully completed either the
Danville Driving School Driver Education Class or the
Online Driver Education Program. Upon completion, students will receive the appropriate certificate to present to the DMV.
2. Notify Danville Driving School After Passing the Permit Test
Once a student has
passed the California Permit Test and has been issued a permit, they must notify Danville Driving School and provide their
permit number (typically a 7-digit number found on the DMV paperwork).

- Student's name
- Home phone number
- Permit number
- Best time to return the call

3. Lesson Scheduling
All driving lesson appointments will be scheduled by the Danville Driving School office.
4. Permit Validation Requirement
Student permits are not legally valid until the student has completed their first one-hour lesson with a licensed driving instructor. During this lesson, the instructor will sign the permit as required by California law.
5. Permit Copies
After the permit has been signed by the instructor, students are strongly encouraged to make several copies and keep them in any vehicle used for practice driving. Students should also carry a copy in their wallet.
DMV Requirements for Taking the California Written Permit Test
Students should bring the following documents to the DMV:
- A certified birth certificate or a valid passport.
- A Social Security card. (Danville Driving School recommends bringing your Social Security number if you do not have the physical card.)
- A Certificate of Completion for Driver Education.
- Form DL 44 (Driver License or Identification Card Application).

DMV Requirements for Obtaining a California Driver's License
To take the California driving test and obtain a driver's license, students must provide:
- A Certificate of Completion of Behind-the-Wheel Training (Danville Driving School Gold Certificate), verifying completion of the state-required minimum of six hours of professional driving instruction.
- A parent or guardian's signature on the student's permit, confirming completion of at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including a minimum of 10 hours of nighttime driving.
- The original driver's permit.
- Proof of automobile insurance for the vehicle being used for the driving test.
Important Notice: California DMV Residency Document Requirements
Effective July 1, 2016, all original applicants for a California Driver License or Identification Card must provide
two different acceptable residency documents.
The address listed on the residency documents must match the residence address provided on the Driver License or Identification Card Application (DL 44). Documents marked with an asterisk (*) do not need to display the California address.
Acceptable Residency Documents
- Rental or lease agreement signed by both the landlord and tenant
- Property deed or title
- Mortgage bill
- Home utility bill (including cellular phone bills)
- School document as defined in California Code of Regulations Section 16.06(a)(1)
- Medical document
- Employment document
- Faith-based organization document showing the organization's name and address
- Insurance documents, including medical, dental, vision, life, home, renter's, or vehicle insurance
- Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) tax return
- California vehicle or vessel title or registration
- U.S. Postal Service Change of Address Confirmation (Form CNL 107)
- Document issued by a U.S. government agency or institution as defined in California Code of Regulations Section 16.02(b)
- Property tax bill or statement
- Financial institution records as defined in California Code of Regulations Section 16.10(c)(16)
- Court documents listing the applicant as a California resident
- A letter on official letterhead from a homeless shelter, shelter for abused women, nonprofit organization, employer, faith-based organization, or U.S. government agency verifying California residency
- A parent, legal guardian, or child may use a birth certificate, and a spouse or domestic partner may use a marriage license or domestic partnership registration certificate to establish their relationship to the individual whose residency documents are being used.
The Following Documents Do Not Apply to AB 60 Applicants
- Voter registration confirmation letter or postcard issued by the California Secretary of State or a local county elections office
- Proof of payment of resident tuition to a California public institution of higher education
- Original approved Claim for Homeowners' Property Tax Exemption (BOE-266) filed with a local California County Assessor
AB 60 Applicants
Applicants applying under AB 60 are only required to provide one acceptable residency document. A California Driver License or Identification Card may be used as an acceptable residency document.
